Glossary keyword - WYSIWYG

WYSIWYG

The abbreviation WYSIWYG stands for “what you see is what you get,” and it is a term used in computing to describe the process of editing content through software to reach a form that reflects its actual appearance when displayed or printed as the final product. These types of content could be web pages, slide presentations, printed documents, etc.

Through the practice of WYSIWYG, users can view a sample of a product close to the future result using a user interface while it is still being designed. Users can directly alter the design of content without the need to remember specific layout commands and type them. The real meaning of WYSIWYG can, however, depend on the perspective of the user. It is a necessity to consider what is added to the website content to improve search engine optimization (SEO).

History

Prior to the practice of WYSIWYG, editors saw the text using the typeface system to edit it. This typeface system had little display of layouts like spacing, margins, etc. For an editor to change the text style, typefaces, or size of the text, he or she had to enter a nonprinting control code, which is now known as a markup code to make any changes. This nuisance left little room to distinguish between a word processor and a text editor.

Critique

Since there are lots of issues to be faced in every execution, the reason for this is designers using WYSIWYG have to take into account the different output devices they work with, and the individual capabilities that come with them. There are many tradeoffs to be made in regards to the different design goals. It is essential to note that each application may use different solution methods for solving different kinds of problems. Another issue that used to rise was the difference between the text fonts displayed on the screen and printed. There would even be issues with the color profiles that would separate the devices. But many of these issues were solved through third-party software programs.
